The Tajik Geological Survey stated that newly discovered rare earth metals tantalum and niobium deposits in Tajikistan could reshape the country's mining industry and economic prospects.

Strategic Discovery in the Rasht Valley

Ilkhom Oymukhammadzoda, Director of the Geological Administration, announced the discovery of substantial niobium and tantalum deposits in the Rasht Valley, based on analysis of 125 samples collected from the Nazaraylok and Yosuman regions.

Tantalum is crucial for the electronics manufacturing industry, while niobium is used in high-strength alloys in the aerospace and construction industries. The strategic importance of these two metals is increasingly evident.

Oymukhammadzoda also confirmed the identification of 15 additional deposits rich in rare metals such as lithium, niobium, and tantalum in remote eastern regions, including Karasu, Agbasoy, Pyron, and Rohshif.

Gold exploration prospects are also emerging. A gold ore body with a grade of 0.96 grams per tonne has been discovered at the Novy Sarimardi deposit, which may attract investor interest.

Geophysical exploration has revealed three anomalies in the Laylakul and Sangibek regions, indicating further mineral exploration and development opportunities.

Tajikistan's Main Rare Earth Resource Zones

Tajikistan's rare earth resources are mainly concentrated in two strategic areas: the central region and the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).

In the central region, exploration is focused on the Zeravshan and Karategin ridges. Currently, reserves of niobium, tantalum, lithium, and tin are being assessed in the pegmatite fields of Karasu, Akbasai, and Payron.

In the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), exploration is underway on the Shughnan, Rushan, Ishkoshim, and Vakhsh ridges. Deposits such as Kolkhozabad, Taglikhas, and Vez-Dara have shown traces of rubidium and other rare elements crucial to high-tech industries.

Economic Potential and National Strategy: Geological surveys, state-funded, focus on assessing reserves of strategic resources. One of the most promising deposits is Nazaraylok, where preliminary estimates suggest reserves of niobium and tantalum could reach hundreds of thousands of tons.

In addition to these metals, Tajikistan's underground also contains beryllium, cesium, lithium, tin, and light lanthanides, all of which are in increasing demand in global markets.

Rare earth resources are becoming the cornerstone of future economic development. With its strategic metal reserves expanding, Tajikistan is poised to become a key player in the global rare earth supply chain.
